2013-2014 Wylie ISD School Calendar Set
The Wylie ISD Board of Trustees approved the 2013-2014 school calendar during the January 21 board meeting. This calendar meets the state requirement of 177 instructional days for students and 187 work days for teachers. Key 2013-2014 dates include:
  • August 26: First day of school
  • September 2: Labor Day
  • October 7: Fair Day
  • November 25 – 29: Thanksgiving Break
  • December 23, 2012 – January 3, 2014: Christmas Break
  • March 10 – 14: Spring Break
  • April 18: Good Friday
  • May 26: Memorial Day
  • June 5: Last day of school
The coming school year will operate with four 9-week grading periods. This consideration came forward as a recommendation from the Wylie ISD Assessment Literacy Committee (made up of teachers, administrators, and all principals) and was open for parent and community comment. The committee noted several benefits of the 9-week calendar:
  • there are only four “stops/starts” during the year. With the increased time demands of assessment, the 9-week marking period would allow for more overall instructional time
  • students have more time to earn additional grades
  • students have more time to master complicated material and coursework
  • teachers can spend less time calculating grades and more time planning for the classroom with four rather than six grade reporting periods.
“We are very excited about the potential for increased learning time the 9-week grading periods will offer our teachers and students,” said Dr. David Vinson, Wylie ISD Superintendent. “When you consider the time spent on assessments and grades, having fewer grading periods will allow us to maximize our instructional time.”
Approximately 90 percent of the comments the district received regarding the 9-week grading periods was favorable. In addition to each 9-week grade, parents of students in grades 2-12 will get progress reports at each 3-week and 6-week point to help ensure students are on track.
In addition to the holidays listed above, there are three embedded Professional Development Days (January 20, February 17, and April 17) and three Early Release Days (September 25, December 20, and June 5). Bad Weather Make-up Days are designated as April 17 and June 6 (to be used in that order).
The 187 teacher work days is a change in the required number of teacher contract days which was 188.

Nurse Terry’s Notes:
As the days are getting warmer don’t forget the bug spray and sunscreen while you are outdoors! There are already mosquitos testing positive for West Nile Virus. Continue allergy medication through the end of May when many plants are finished blooming out.
Students fever must be below 100 without Tylenol or Motrin for 24 hours prior to returning to school. Please continue to remind students not to share food or drinks at school, as that is how many contagious illnesses are spread. Hand washing is still the best prevention from getting sick. If you have questions about your son or daughter, please call or email me.

Attendance Information:
Parents, you may now use Parent Access to send a note to excuse an absence by the following the steps below:
  1. Log in to your Family  Access (where you check your grades)
  2. Click on “Attendance” under the General Information
  3. Select the “Absence Notifications” tab
  4. Click on “Add Notification”
  5. Then you will use the “pull down” tables to enter times and reason for the absences.  Add any additional comments you wish.
  6. Click on the “Save” button.
In order for an absence to be excused, a student must bring a note from a Parent/Guardian or original documentation from a medical facility, court, etc. or submit a note using Parent Access within three (3) days of the student’s return to school.  If your child accumulates unexcused absences that total three (3) days or parts of days in a four week period or ten (10) or more days within a six month period, you and/or your child can be prosecuted for violation of the Compulsory Attendance Law. Thank you for your help in keeping your child’s attendance up to date.  If you have any questions regarding your child’s attendance, please contact our Assistant Principal, Tiffany Harrod at (972)429-3256
